  4. Minutes of previous meeting, 2012-09-26, reviewed and approved.
  5. *Discussion about what to do with sugar beets for storage. Traditionally done in a sand bed. Carol suggests putting it under eaves in back of green building, tarped on top. Ikea building is another option, as is green house.
  6. Old business:
    • To do reviewed:
      1. Ben's prep of east field almost complete.
      2. No other task progress reported.
    • Calendar reviewed, mostly comings-goings.
    • Project updates:
      1. Upcoming classes and events: We have a "TBD" for Sunday, 25 November. Jen might offer a Reiki class then. She is supposed to get back to Jan with her needs so we can do a budget and come up with a price.
        • ACTION: [x] Follow up with Jen about Reiki class on Sunday, 25 November. (Jan Steinman)
      2. Recruiting: no changes
      3. Goat shed II: Need to get hay feeders built.
      4. Commercial propagation greenhouse: no changes.
      5. Emergency power: no changes. Time to order materials, notably the 150' of #10x3 rubber cable.
      6. Yellow house suite: some stuff moved out in prep for demolition. Jan needs help getting large stereo system out and over to classroom.
      7. Water system maintenance:
        • Camlock connectors to be welded this week - delayed.
        • Fill the cistern hole next to well to prevent/reduce surface water infiltration.
  7. Health & safety:
    • Carol notes that the pallet path to the goat shed is going to get slippery when it rains. Ben suggested roofing shingles, as opposed to expensive hardware cloth. Rudy will scout the Blackburn Mall for any decent shingles to use.
    • ACTION: [x] Move the goat bridge, which has hardware cloth on it, to replace the chicken bridge, before weekend's predicted rain. (Jan Steinman)
  8. New business:
    1. Review 2012-09 harvest, 2012-09 sales, 2012-09 labour, and New.gif 2012-09 gross productivity.
      • Harvested $5000 worth of produce for September.
      • $2800 in sales from market garden. $700 worth Seckel pears.
      • 544 hours of labour, from Ben, Carol, and Jan. No volunteer labour logged this month.
      • Eggs productivity suspicious. Need to log labour. Carol estimates 1.5 hours per week. Jan would like to time specific tasks and add them up. (It takes 3:17 to let them out in the morning, for example.)
    2. Review upcoming volunteers:
      • Emma leaving today to help a friend who needs someone to house sit in an emergency.
      • Alex & Jim roundly approved; Jan will get in touch and see when they can start now that Emma's room is available.
  9. Arrivals/Departures:
    • Emma leaving today.
    • Ben away 12-18 October.
    • Alex & Jim possibly starting Any Day Now.
  10. Farm meeting
    1. Firewood on Friday work party. Jan to contact Gavin.
    2. Ben continuing to prepare to have goats in the East Field.
      • Clear the packing shed and/or make it inaccessible to goats. (Ben)
      • Move packing shed.
    3. Relocate large gate.
      • Make materials list (Jan).
      • Install person gate where large gate is currently. Needs a post and brace.
    4. Fence off Rudy's winter garden. (Rudy) - Done.
    5. Harvest anything we want to keep. (Ben) - will be done this week.
      • Quinoa heads to Carol, who will process - this Friday. (Carol) Harvested, yet to process.
      • Harvest leeks, carrots & sugar beets. Leeks to Natureworks? Ben will investigate.
    6. Need to look at place to plant garlic in east field -- discuss when Ben returns.
    7. Need to investigate cover cropping. Inventory our seeds and determine what to buy. Purchase from Integrity today as needed.
    8. Find some "goat toys" via online lists or Rudy salvage.
    9. Look into pruning big pear trees.
    10. Pull and hang tomatoes.
    11. Markets:
      • Saturday: Ben will know by Thursday if it is worth going or not. If so, Jan will have to do by himself.
      • Tuesday: Will re-assess Monday. Jan by himself, unless Carol available.
  11. Plans for next week:
    • Jan: open/close greenhouse while Ben away, water on Sunday and Wednesday.
    • Rudy: seek goat toys for East Field (especially large spools).
    • Carol: make jelly - ongoing.
    • Carol: pickles from the many that we aren't going to sell.
    • Carol: Pickle beets.
