First principle: relationship
Everything we do is a relationship. We are interdependent. Stewards, in acting on behalf of resources that cannot speak for themselves, recognize that such resources touch other resources, and agree to collaborate with other stewards in such cases.
Stewards may form teams of collaborating resources, and are encouraged to meet regularly, informally or formally, as the need arises. Stewards act as peers in such collaborations, avoiding hierarchy unless both necessary and obvious.
Second principle: communication
Relationship extends to the greater community. Stewards agree to inform members of actions that may impact them.
The actions of stewards can be questioned by the greater community, recognizing that excessive or irresponsible questioning can considerably affect a steward's ability to work on behalf of his or her resource.
Third principle: autonomy
Stewards have considerable autonomy in carrying out their responsibilities. Stewardship is a delegation and ratification mechanism, and stewards are periodically reviewed by results obtained, not by means taken, as long as those means are in alignment with our agreed values.
Thus, those questioning stewards must justify such by their results or lack thereof, rather than because they disagree with their means.
Fourth principle: accountability
Stewards are accountable for the result of their actions. Stewards agree to budgets, schedules, and specific outcomes, and may suffer a graduated series of consequences if such budgets, schedules, and outcomes are not realized.
