Our successful greenhouse operation needs to expand.


An opportunity has been presented to us to salvage two each 22'x70' glass and aluminum greenhouses from a site on the University of Victoria campus. Although this is an ambitious project, we could not pass it up.

Goal or deliverable

A 22' x 150' aluminum and glass greenhouse, set up for producing transplant propagation starts.

Timeline, schedule, or end date

time-related aspects of the project, which may include intermediate deadlines, dependencies, etc

Updated 2017-07-12:

  • 2017-07-09: site layout, foundation and preparation
  • 2017-08-06: begin assembling framework
  • 2017-09-03: begin installing glass
  • 2017-10-05: begin installing and repairing infrastructure
  • 2018-01-01: begin planting


  1. Prep site
    1. Make foundation as needed
      1. Clear site of small green building, storage, debris, etc.
      2. Mow down site
      3. Rough (but square) layout for frame supports
      4. Dig pits for footings
      5. Precise (1/8" tolerance) layout for frame supports
      6. Procure frame supports
      7. Pound frame supports
      8. Drill and insert footing anchors into frame supports
      9. Re-check plumb, square, and level and adjust as necessary
      10. Pour footings around frame supports
    2. Survey and clean structural components
    3. Source any replacement components
    4. Source electrical and irrigation plumbing
  2. Re-construct frame
    1. Attach standards to frame supports
    2. For each pair of north and south supports,
      1. Loosely attach top plate
      2. Erect and loosely attach truss
      3. Install horizontal purlin and ridge cap
      4. Check square and tighten far end, leaving traveling end loosely attached
      5. Install roof vent and vent lifter rotary in 20' increments
    3. Install glass holding components
  3. Clean and re-install glass, replacing broken panes
  4. Install rolling tables
    1. Layout, dig footings, pound posts, pour concrete
    2. Assemble tables on posts
  5. Rehabilitation
    1. Connect electrical and plumbing
    2. Debug and repair control systems
  6. Integration
    1. Build structure to connect two greenhouses at centre
      1. Cut existing greenhouse north side purlin, roll-up rod, and ribs as needed
