Seed best sown as soon as it is ripe in a cold frame. A period of cold stratification may help stored seed to germinate. Any seed that does not swell should be carefully pricked with a needle, taking care not to damage the embryo, and re-soaked for a further 24 hours.

Pot up seedlings and plant out to the landscape only after they are well-established.

Grow on until the seedlings are 0.5cm tall then remove from the water and pot up a week later. Grow the plants on for at least their first winter in a greenhouse and then plant them out in late spring or early summer, after the last expected frosts. Consider giving the plants some protection from the cold for their first few winters outdoors.
