  1. Meeting starts 14:37
  2. Check-in
  3. Agenda approved. This is a special planning meeting to agree on the top projects for 2015 and their priorities.
  4. Minutes of last meeting not reviewed.
  5. Old business, not reviewed
  6. New business: review projects and set priorities for 2015.
    • Reviewed each of the projects seeking funding and each of the projects in process. Priorities set for the top four projects.
    • All agreed that the criteria for prioritizing was food production and income generation.
    1. The community farm store was everyone's first choice for top priority
      • Pluses: income, low cost, low labour, could be done incrementally
      • Minuses: requires staffing, additional bookkeeping and administration
      • Interesting: would force a re-organization and clean-up of the surrounding area
      • Best done with focused attention of several people at once, rather than one person spending six weeks on it.
      • Agreed that the most opportune time to do this would be during Cleome's spring break (March 28 - April 5; need to verify), although portions could be completed beforehand.
    2. Second priority is a new project, greenhouse drainage
      • Requires an estimated 30 hours of digging, $175 worth of 4" pipe, and two yards of heavy drain rock.
      • Pluses: enables earlier greenhouse production, allows better use of surrounding area for planting nitrogen-fixing fruit trees
      • Minuses: requires considerable manual labour.
      • Interesting: connecting lateral french drains with underground pipe to the large existing ditch will simplify mechanical agriculture north of the greenhouse
    3. Third priority is the Project/Electric_market_vehicle, all but the charger, which will require additional funding.
      • Dependent on Jan (or Jan's direction) for most of the work.
      • Pluses: most of the expensive bits are already procured, will reduce use of diesel-sucking Dodge pickup, near-free charging at Art Spring during markets, leave packed for market, freeing the pickup for hauling tasks.
      • Minuses: requires an expensive charger, about $2,000 for a four-hour charge.
      • Interesting: will change our driving habits
    4. Fourth priority is a new project, animal shelters, building small shelters against wind, rain, and sun for each paddock.
      • Pluses: using mostly found materials, enables quick-rotational grazing to make better use of pasture, cut down on supplemental feed expenses.
      • Minuses: none noted
      • Interesting: nothing noted
    5. Fifth priority is a commercial kitchen, along the plans of the outdoor kitchen project, but concentrating on an enclosed, heatable space for doing commercial food products.
      • Pluses: can be done incrementally: envelope will support the farm store with vermin- and weather-proof food storage without purchase of appliances, can be used for classes on food preservation and cheese-making, will enable more agri-tourism events, will free up house kitchen from things like jam making.
      • Minuses: can be expensive if we don't shop carefully for appliances.
      • Interesting: nothing noted
    • Other projects were tabled, pending substantial progress on these five priority projects.
    • Set monthly themes for 2015:
      • Same as last year, except make:
        • January: Interns/Personnel
        • February: Greenhouse
        • March: Construction (farm store)
        • August: Education/Agri-Tourism
  7. Review arrivals/departures, guests and apprentices:
    • Welcome, Adam, Grace, and EJ!
  8. Farm meeting: not reviewed
  9. Confirmed next meeting: Next residents' meeting: Jan facilitator, Saturday, 10 January 2015 16:00. Will continue meeting every other week, to see if it needs to be more or less often.
  • Meeting adjourned, 16:57
  • Respectfully submitted, Jan Steinman 07:04, 3 January 2015 (CET)
