  3. Agenda approved.
  4. Minutes of previous meeting, 2012-07-04, approved.
  5. Old business:
    • Matters arising from old minutes: discussed while reviewing minutes.
    • To do list - skipped, oops!
      • Produce shed is becoming more of a priority as warmer weather sets in. Jan investigating walk-in freezer and other options. A nice big one is currently on the lists.
    • Calendar reviewed.
    • Project updates:
      • Upcoming classes and events:
        • Ben's song writing workshop scheduled for Sunday, 29 July.
        • Press release sent to Island Tides, leaflets printed (Ben is distributing), press release to Driftwood for publication the Wednesday prior to the event.
      • Necessary changes in involvement in EcoReality
        • Two people are no longer interested: one, citing desire to continue in the Cowichan Valley, the other concerned about finances.
        • Two other are still strongly interested.
      • Goat shed II
        • Needs internal gate latches, key hole feeders and other minor bits, then can be rolled into place.
        • Carol suggests moving the cistern deck to use as a "dance floor."
        • Jan will work with Shane in doing the final carpentry.
        • Rudy changed the wheel -- thanks!
      • Commercial propagation greenhouse:
        • Fertigation system all but ready - DONE and running!
        • Still working on tables (2 yet to do, with simple mods needed on various others).
        • Need to plumb main headers in prop room, then can close the project.
        • Need to re-tape NW corner small tear.
        • Still need to raise floor of centre room this fall after harvest of one of the outer rooms is complete. Discussed using topsoil from pond construction for this, reserving subsoil for filling in the cistern pit.
        • Would like to close out this capital project soon, but the last expenses for irrigation may drag out a bit.
      • Emergency power: on hold until next fall; need to have in place by next winter.
      • Yellow house suite - no change until at least the 21st. Dave is interested and may fund remodelling.
      • Water system maintenance - Still need to haul out and repair old cistern and fill in the hole in the ground.
  6. Health & safety:
    • No new issues.
  7. New business:
    1. Meter readings and billing for outbuilding electricity use - Done, Geo will pay the electricity.
    2. Photo op for Country Grocer poster:
      • Right after meeting? After reviewing comings/goings, decided to wait until after lunch so Brad & Jennifer can be in the photo.
      • Meet outside greenhouse right after lunch!
    3. Household stuff:
      • Need to cover for Carol: cooking, cleaning, laundry, chickens, yard tasks, etc.
      • Carol will make a written list of things that need support. She will brief individuals on some of these things.
      • Saturday after dinner: household stuff meeting to come up with a rotating schedule for support tasks.
    • Upcoming volunteers:
      • Kelly coming today.
      • Laura Oxley - August 13 - 29.
      • Virginia & Tracy planning on coming 6th of August, Tracy's application coming. Not confirmed, need input from farm team before committing.
      • Mother/daughter pair from Calgary: Jan will phone them.
  8. Arrivals/Departures:
    • Shane arrived yesterday.
    • Carol leaving indefinitely on Monday, the 16th.
  9. Farm meeting:
    • Friday Work Party: complete goat shed II and have it in place for evening milking.
      • construct keyhole feeders
      • move old goat trailer to south of yellow house as a sun refuge
      • install latches internal, and door-open catch external
      • prep site, remove canopy and pull back "dance floor"
      • drag over new "dance floor"
      • move new shed in place
      • screw canopy down to dance floor
      • set up for evening's milking
      • alternative: weeding party
      • East garden weeding and bed prep for root crops.
    • Other farm tasks:
      • Finish mulching strawberries.
      • Check cane berries for harvest, either market or if too little, household use.
      • Spread chips on west field paths.
      • Goat weening starts on Sunday.
      • Potatoes need hilling - weekly.
      • Greenhouse centre room needs main lines put overhead.
      • Lettuce letting up, so we need to cut back on what we wholesale. Be thoughtful to maintain relationships.
      • Fulford Mercantile wants to carry our produce - interested in longer lasting produce.
      • Photo-op for picture of everyone at the greenhouse for promo and picture for Country Grocer, today, right after lunch.
      • Finish garlic harvest today, will leave 3 beds for other plantings.
    • Markets:
      • Saturday - Ben will open, with Meaghan at 10am and Jan at 1pm, Jan & Meaghan will close.
      • Tuesday - Ben and Meaghan.
  10. Plans for next week:
    • Ben: Weeding, weeding, weeding…
    • Ben: Transplanting almost everything out of the prop room.
    • Ben: mowing in east field.
    • Jan: mowing in west field.
    • Jan: Jetta fixed by Friday.
    • All: Goat shed II
    • Jan: complete fertigation system; install overheaders in the propagation room.
    • Jan: Trim goat hooves.
    • Jan: Geo's washing machine.
    • Jan: Complete greenhouse tables and irrigation, close Project 126 expenditures and reconcile project.
