Dear [name here],
EcoReality is in the process of forming, with the goal of developing an ecovillage in the South Gulf Islands of British Columbia. This ecovillage will be a model of sustainable development, and will feature public outreach and education as included goals.
Although this effort began with a dozen people at the September 23, 2005 kick-off meeting, and we have many others on our mailing list, we decided to split the group into two segments.
We have a dedicated core group of financial stake holders who are working out the legal issues and guidance documents and are seeking some good property. And we also have people who, while very interested, cannot make the same level of commitment at this time -- or perhaps never.
This latter group, our "Advisory Council," is very important to us, and we want to include them in our planning, while maintaining the efficiency that a small core group brings.
So we are asking you to join our Advisory Council, so we can bounce ideas off you, as well as keep you informed of our ongoing, rapidly changing and solidifying plans.
"All right, what's this gonna cost me," I can hear you thinking. Nothing, nada, nil. Just the use of your brain cells from time to time.
"Oh no! I'm so busy! I can't spare any brain cells!" you might reply. Not to worry, we don't want to raise your stress level! We're hoping to keep it directed and fun, with several levels of participation:
- Info Junkie: "Keep me closely informed! I'll read and cherish every word!"
- Browser: we put you on our private email list, similar to a "Yahoo Group" list.
- Occasional: we only seek your advice on specific issues that relate to your expertise.
"So, what's in it for me?" If you have little or no intention of living in our particular ecovillage, you'll have our undying gratitude and that warm feeling you get from influencing A Good Thing.
But if you would like to live in our ecovillage at some point, you'll be close to what's happening, you'll gain experience in community governance and organization, you'll have access to workshops we're planning, and while we can't promise anything at this point, we're certainly going to look first to the Advisory Council when it comes time to add new residents -- whether via renting, internal mortgage loans, or full financial partners.
We'll be having monthly General Meetings in the Vancouver BC area, but we're hoping to successfully involve people from far and wide, as well. To that end, I'm hoping you will be willing to be a "Browser," and take part in our email conversations and wiki collaborations.
Did I mention the wiki? Do you know what it is? It's an exciting new way to collaborate using a web browser, and we want you to take part! We'll be doing periodic live wiki training in Vancouver, and can help you get up-to-speed wherever you are. Being self-directed, the wiki is especially appropriate to both the "Info Junkies," and to the "Occasionals" who don't want to be on the general mailing list.
"Cool! I'm there! What do I do next?" Simply reply to this message, and we'll add you as appropriate. Please include a few words about your specific interests and expertise, as well as what level of participation you'd prefer. (Remember, we're hoping you'll want to be a "Browser!")
"Man, this is bo-ring. Let me outta here!" We don't want to pester or spam people with unwanted email. The mailing list is hand-maintained, so you can't sign yourself on or off, but an email to Jan will get you removed pronto.
I hope you're even 1% as excited about this as we are, and your participation can only make it even better!
Thanks for joining the EcoReality Advisory Council!
PS: We are being fairly selective, so please don't forward this to friends. Rather, join the Advisory Council, and then make some recommendations for further invitations.
