Need
The white farmhouse currently has one 2X4X4 closet and very limited shelving and storage areas.
Description
- Build shelves in office above windows that are kind of "loft" style.
- Remove paneling from one side under stairs and open up what previously was a storage area.
- Remove one side of dead space beside fridge and create more shelving space in kitchen by building shelves in this space.
Goal or deliverable
- Loft style shelves in office.
- Storage under stairs.
- Shelving in kitchen.
Timeline, schedule, or end date
- Starting the week of Feb 9. Completed by Feb 21.
- Exploratory mission week of Feb 9, completed by March 15.
- Exploratory mission week of Feb 9, completed by March 15.
Plan
- Use 2X4, 2X2 and plywood (or shelving boards if we can get a deal). Shelves will be screwed on a 2X2 support above the windows on the wall and mounted on the ceiling with 2X4 supports mounted to a 2X4 on the ceiling (which we think is 1" paneling and we'll look for a stud). The goal is to make the shelves strong enough that if you lose your balance while on the ladder and have to hang on the shelves to save yourself it will hold you.
- Carefully remove the front panel of the framed in area under the stairs. Ideally we keep this in tact and put some hinges in it to have it be a matching door. This will take a bit of hardware and some 1X4 materials to turn a piece of wall into a door. Once access is achieved we will hopefully not need to do any more work to the space as it will be used for bins and sturdy boxes.
- Make small hole in wall (that could be patched if we abort the mission) to look and verify that this is indeed a dead space. If it is empty space we'll remove the front drywall and make shelves in the entire space, working around the studs. This will be used as a pantry and kitchen storage.
